Vehicle: Toyota Axio
Service: Complete CVT transmission overhaul and rebuild
Time in workshop: 3 to 5 days
Warranty: 2-year parts and service guarantee when premium-sourced parts are used, with terms confirmed in writing
1. The Problem: Severe Gearbox Slipping and Loss of Power
A Toyota Axio owner brought their car to MRB Auto Solution in Dhaka with a worrying symptom: severe gearbox slipping. When the accelerator was pressed, engine RPM surged but the car barely gained speed. Shifts were jerky and the car hesitated under load.
When a CVT fails, many owners are offered a used gearbox as the quick fix. Used units carry unknown wear and rarely come with a meaningful warranty. Before recommending anything, we performed a full tear-down inspection to find the root cause.
2. The Diagnosis: Water Contamination from a Failed CVT Oil Cooler
When we drained the fluid and opened the transmission, the cause was clear: water and coolant had contaminated the gearbox.
How does water get into a sealed CVT?
The Toyota Axio uses a CVT oil cooler (warmer) that regulates transmission fluid temperature using engine coolant. In this car, the internal barrier of the oil cooler had corroded and ruptured, letting radiator coolant mix directly with the CVT fluid (Type TC).
Water in transmission fluid creates a thick, milky emulsion. This fluid loses its lubricating and hydraulic properties, which caused serious internal damage:
- Belt and pulley damage: The CVT belt chain and chain pulley damper sub-assembly lost lubrication and began to slip metal-on-metal.
- Hydraulic failure: Moisture and rust particles clogged the solenoids and channels in the valve body.
- Shaft wear: The gearbox top shaft assembly showed heavy wear from fluid starvation.
- Blocked filter: The gear oil filter was choked with emulsified sludge.
3. The Solution: A Complete CVT Rebuild
Flushing the fluid alone cannot save a water-damaged CVT. Our transmission team carried out a full rebuild:
- Remove the root cause: We replaced the faulty CVT oil cooler so water and transmission fluid can no longer mix.
- Disassemble and clean: The transmission was fully dismantled, chemically cleaned and ultrasonically cleaned to remove moisture, rust and sludge.
- Replace damaged components: We replaced the gearbox top shaft assembly, CVT belt chain, chain pulley damper sub-assembly, complete valve body assembly and gear oil filter, using premium-sourced genuine or Tier-1 OEM parts from authenticated suppliers.
- Electrical inspection: We checked the wiring and performed the necessary calibration so the ECU/TCM communicates properly with the transmission solenoids.
- Refill and road test: The rebuilt unit was filled with CVT fluid Type (TC) and road-tested under different load conditions.
4. The Result: Smooth Shifting and a 2-Year Guarantee
After the rebuild and calibration, the Axio returned to the road with smooth, responsive acceleration and no RPM flaring during our road tests. The owner drove away with a 2-year parts and service guarantee, which we offer on premium-sourced parts. To support the customer through a major repair, we included the replacement CVT oil cooler as a goodwill gesture.

Why choose a CVT rebuild over a used gearbox?
- Known internal condition: The belt chain, damper, valve body and shaft are replaced, so you are not guessing what is inside.
- Root cause fixed: A replacement gearbox can fail again if a leaking oil cooler or wiring fault is left undiagnosed.
- Warranty: We stand behind our parts and workmanship with a 2-year guarantee on premium-sourced parts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a CVT rebuild take?
This repair took 3 to 5 days. Timing depends on parts availability and the extent of the damage.
Is a rebuild cheaper than a used gearbox?
A used gearbox can cost less upfront, but it carries unknown wear and usually little or no warranty. A rebuild addresses the cause of the failure and is backed by our guarantee.
What are the signs of a failing CVT?
RPM surging without acceleration, jerking or delayed shifts, whining noises, and milky or dark transmission fluid.
Can a leaking oil cooler really destroy a transmission?
Yes. Coolant in the fluid removes lubrication and clogs hydraulic passages, so early inspection matters.
